the mammalian dive reflex
activated by consciously holding the breath in
slows down the heart rate almost immediately
allows for vasodilation (widened blood vessels)
& general calming (tf) down of the nervous system
ever wonder how whales and dolphin can dive for so long?

splashing cold water on the face
can have the same response
personally, breath holds seem easier
& can be practiced about any where

conscious breath holds
are in direct contrast to holding the breath with exertion
a.k.a. the Valsalva maneuver
this increases the heart rate & vasoconstriction
causing an immediate stress response

5-5-5-2 breathing can support the former
5 seconds in
5 seconds to hold
5 seconds out
2 seconds to pause before beginning again

for someone who trains others in breathing all day
this form of resetting the breathing mechanism
has been consistently the most water tight …
pun just may be intended!

don’t forget to breathe …

  1. Breathing is an amazing phenomena, a life all its own…literally. That is why having emphysema it becomes so close, so minute by minute, to be seen in such individual minutiae. You even recognize change within it, something elsewhere in your body always talks to it, for it to recognize and change accordingly. It is indeed the ‘breath’ of life. Great post Tiffany, you speak from it well 😀❤️🙏

    1. Thank you, Mark! So glad that you’re practicing different breathing exercises especially given your emphysema! Since practicing breath works, I have fewer and less severe lower respiratory problems and colds don’t last as long as they used to ♥️🙏🏼
