sleep has been elusive for me for more than a bit
while it’s very easy for me to fall asleep
the trouble is staying there betwixt
the witching hours of 2-4 AM in particular
it does seem to run in the fam, too…

i’ve tried more things that one can shake a stick at
& i’m tired. pun absolutely intended

it seems, upon doing some research, that insomnia has a behavioral component
& CBT-i – cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia
has shown positive benefits for many even with phone apps

after some looking around & pricing
am going to try one app called “nightowl”
it’s a bit more low-tech than some of the others
but also less costly with a flat vs monthly fee

it’s a 56-day program (perhaps a 53 day sleep quest is next… )
so time will tell if this is the right fit for me

it turns out that IBS is a risk factor for insomnia
a 2-3x risk factor according to which study one reads
& the night i had the gut attack, i had the worst sleep i’d had in weeks
while the pain was significantly less severe, it was still apparent
& keep me turning throughout the night

it would also make sense that insomnia could also cause an IBS flare-up
considering the stress induced by sleep deprivation
& stress being a risk factor for IBS*

so here we go! another adventure awaits (somewhat begrudgingly)
i do feel the L. reuteri yogurt is helping, by the way,
just need to make some more changes, it seems

*IBS risk factors according to the Cleveland Clinic:

  • Family history of IBS.
  • Emotional stress, tension or anxiety.
  • Food intolerance.
  • History of physical or sexual abuse.
  • Severe digestive tract infection.
