there are certain days of the calendar
birthdays, anniversaries, end-aversaries & holidays
where the inner reflection cuts a bit deeper
halloween, for several reasons, has been one of them
where resentment would bloom
negative thoughts would loom
& memories of yesteryears would draw more clear
yet something was a bit different this year
the intrusive thoughts from before stayed away
it was not something i even realized
until the end of the day
began to close in
i’ll take this as a win
meanwhile, the hits hit a bit harder:
as children grow older
the challenges take things sideways
differently than before
leaving this parent to recognize the need to wait
to quietly breathe through the desires to make a move
or take up argument which wouldn’t bear fruit
the silence, at times, thick as a journeyman’s boots
as the cold rain hit the windshield
the wipers louder than just moments before
while the chills from walking door-to-door
were still moving up & down my body
it was then when the medicine hit
with the stark realization
that the issues at hand were out of my hands
rarely an easy pill to take for this parent to take …
some hits are worth their wound
